U.S. Huntsville Land Office - detailed monthly statements of unearned fees and unofficial moneys, 1895-1905.

District land office Receivers were responsible for all financial transactions relating to the sale of public land. This series contains bound printed forms entitled "detailed monthly statement of unearned fees and unofficial moneys received, earned, disbursed or returned; embracing fees or commissions, or payments for land in cases where applications to file or enter are incomplete or cannot be allowed for any reasons, and of amounts deposited for publication of notices, and as fees of cancellation, and of all moneys deposited as security for cost of transcribing testimony in contest cases, together with a statement of amount refunded, paid publishers or reported in Receivers' account." Entries were made for each transaction. Each entry consists of the date of the receipt; the character of deposit, application or kind of entry (cancellation, timber depredation, homestead, isolated tract, etc.); name and residence of applicant; location of land; amount received or deposited as fees, amount received as commissions, or amount received as purchase money; amount returned, when returned; amount earned and reported in quarterly contest account, other items earned or paid to publishers; and remarks (date earned, rejected, suspended). Each page contains a recapitulation and balance for each month and the Receiver's signature. These records document the financial aspects of public land sales and illustrate the complex duties of district land office Receivers.
